A review on national clinical research support system

Abstract
This paper is to review generally the clinical research support system at the national level in United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Korea. The support system was reviewed at the aspects of research activity, funding, and network building; and then compared among the countries. The more concrete aim of this study is to suggest appropriate directions of national supporting system for a clinical research to in Korea. Literature and data were collected from the websites, reports, and journals. In the developed countries, the national support was constructed by considering the various aspect of clinical researcher-initiated research. In Korea, the support projects were performed through various institutions such as National Cancer Center, Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Korea National Institute of Health, Korea National Enterprise for Clinical Trials and National Strategic Coordinating Center for Clinical Research. The funding was concentrated at the national support system to provided mainly and utilized the existing university hospital to improve their research function. However the diversity of supporting system seems insufficient comparing other developed countries. The system needs to be changed the funding focusing to multi-dimensional supporting, and also, reorganized more systematically. With these changes, investigator-initiated clinical research for generating the evidence will be activated in Korea.
